Jasprit Bumrah Sent for Scans, Virat Kohli Resumes India Captaincy in Sydney

On the second day of the 5 th match and last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held at SCG, Virat Kohli took the captaincy position when Jasprit Bumrah was forced to leave the field because of a slight soreness. The seriousness of Bumrah’s injury has not been determined, but it is known that he had to leave the ground for imaging with the team doctor.

There were pictures taken and circulated showing Bumrah wearing his training kit entering a car to be ferried to a neighboring hospital.

What Happened to Bumrah? Injury Update
Bumrah first went off the field just before the lunch break on Saturday. He came back to bowl his optional over after the break but he left the ground shortly after. Abhimanyu Easwaran could only come on as substitute field when Robin was sent on as a batsman.

Earlier in the field, Bumrah was seen talking to Virat Kohli probably to inform him of the pain he was feeling while bowing the ball. Kohli then take the captaincy and was able to make proper bowling alterations almost instantly. The youngsters Prasidh Krishna and Nitish Kuma Reddy delivered the breakthroughs needed and India got Australia out for 181, thereby winning the game by 4 runs.

But judging from Bumrah’s ability, his injury is capable of determining the outcome of the Test, as well as the series. His status for the second innings as India’s frontline strike bowler and a stand-in captain in Rohit Sharma’s absence is still up in the air. Sharma had chosen to sit out from the series decider because of a slump in front of the woods.

It was learnt during the tea break that Bumrah might be suffering from a back problem which he had during past also and he had surgery of his back a couple of years back.

Bumrah scored a record breaking
Bumrah set up India early in the day when he got the away moving deliveries, which cleaned up Marnus Labuschagne around the off-stump.

In this wicket Bumrah surpassed Ishant Sharma and became the highest wicket taker amongst Indian bowlers in Australia the wicket counted towards Bumrah’s tally of 32 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He surpassed Bishan Singh Bedi’s record of 31 wickets in the 1977-78 series that came in the first three Test matches. In the same series, BS Chandrasekhar had also taken 28 wickets.

Bumrah equalled Bedi’s record by getting rid of Usman Khawaja with the last delivery of Day 1 after some verbals against Sam Konstas.
