Kusal Perera has recorded his name in the Sri Lankan history on Thursday by making a record achievement as the first Sri Lankan batter who scores over 2000 runs T20 Internationals. The latest milestone was achieved in the third one-day international against New Zealand at the Saxton Oval in Nelson. Also notable in Perera’s innings was a century, the fastest ever by a Sri Lankan T20I, and his first in the format. He stroked a brilliant fifty that enabled Sri Lanka post a daunting 218 for five in 20 overs after losing the toss.
Sri Lanka, although they had been beaten comprehensively in the three match series, came out to play with a great deal of fight in the last match. Perera especially was in a destroying mood as he mauled the Kiwi bowlers, New Zealand having lost opportunities for wickets when going at 15 and at 60. The left-hander was dismissed in the 19th over with a catch given to Rachin Ravindra off Daryl Mitchell’s bowl.
He came up with decent stands with Avishka Fernando (17) for the third wicket and a match altering 100 runs with Charith Asalanka, who scored a fine 46 off 24 balls. Asalanka continued the rampage, making five sixes and a four, to take Sri Lanka past the 200-run mark.
New Zealand made a spirited attempt to overturn their fortune but they forkl çš„ çŸå¤„ by seven runs giving Sri Lanka a consolation victory in the series.
