It was a sad end for a wonderful knock which had brought Rishabh Pant on the centurion list however, it was a disappointing finish on the final day of the fourth Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) against Australia and put India in a vulnerable spot. Pant, who was looking settled at the crease, played a brainless shot off Travis Head which gave Australia an important breakthrough at a stage when the match was closely poised.
Rishabh Pant’s decision to get dismissed only adds more problems to India.
This coming when Pant was in the middle forcefully in India’s second innings. Pant failed to read a delivery by Travis Head which was slightly a verge of being a short ball and ball was outside the off-stump, Pant came for the shot against the spin.
Sadly, the ball stayed low and took the bottom edge of the bat before rising into the air. Deep long-on was Mitchell Marsh, who was running to his left, and he pull off a brilliant catch to remove Pant from the crease.
Travis Head, who had been going about his work with the ball without much noticeable effect, got his first series wicket. While he remained clinically calm when the arrow hit him, his jubilation over the feat was met with a lot of concern.
The Controversial Celebration by Travis Head
In the match following Pant’s dismissal, Head took a unnecessary dig and the gesture that ensued caused a lot of controversy on and off the cricket field. It was carried out in a fashion that was simultaneously an expression of anger and victory, and was filmed, hence propagating on the Social media forum as viral act. Some detractors wondered whether the symbolic move was a creasing of the rules governing players on the field and thus sparking controversy among fans and other experts.
In the meantime, when writing the report, India has scored 138/6. Yashasvi Jaiswal, the only Indian who stood out with the bat for the side in this series, is still not out on 82. Although he is moving closer to his three-figure mark, Jaiswal understands that occupying the crease there is the only way through which India has a chance of leveling the playing field.
