It cannot be debated that senior hands like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have failed to step up the mark in Australia, they have not able to come up with their runs when it was needed. While retirement issue has already begun to hover over India’s captain Rohit Sharma, Kohli is also under pressure for not handling the weakness in his technique that led some of his dismissals in the Australian tour. India cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar was also candid in expressing his vents on future of seniors such as Kohli and Rohit in the Indian team.
Gavaskar was very particular about Kohli’s foot movement while playing outside off and he opined that was the reason why Kohli can’t stop getting out.
This is why one cannot help but observe that Kohli’s footwork is not synchronized with the ball pitch. Rather than advance towards the ball he is retreating and his foot is pointing down the pitch. If the foot was pointing more at the ball, then he would have a greater likelihood of hitting the ball with the middle of the bat,” Gavaskar said to India Today.
“Because his foot isn’t flexing, he then stretches to get to the ball, and that has remained a problem with him,” he said.
With the discussion about the start of the process of letting out the seniors getting even MORE heated, Gavaskar says the selectors have to come to terms with the business updegardes because unlike the expected top-order Muscle from the seniors, it has not been forthcoming.
“As it stands now, it is up to the selectors to make the right decisions for the team. The expected contributions have not been made. The top order is supposed to lay the platform, therefore if they are not performing why are we expecting the lower order to be? Gavaskar said.
“The seniors have not made the much needed contributions. All they had to do was bat today and give themselves a chance for the Sydney Test, he said.
showing bitchiness Gavaskar urged that the misfortune was on the senior players which have put India in this situation in Australia.
“It is all because of the top order failure and that is why India is in this situation now,” he added.
