Karan Veer Mehra was announced the winner of Bigg Boss 18 by Salman Khan, who gave him ₹50 lakh. Fans had expected that Vivian Dsena would be the winner of the show as it is a kind of unofficial rule that Khan challenges or breaks some time.
Bigg Boss 18 Winner Announced by Salman Khan
Finally, on January 19, tomorrow’s superstar Salman Khan revealed the winner of Bigg Boss Season 18. In the finale they had Karan Veer Mehra and Vivian Dsena as both contestants in final round. Then, finally Karan Veer was declared the winner and he won the trophy along with ₹50 lakh.
Breaking the “Left-Side” Rule
During declaration of the winner, it seemed like Salman Khan violates some sort of code that comes with Bigg Boss Show. On paper, there is no rule but audiences of Bigg Boss have observed yet another trend called ‘left side rule.’ Over the years, it has been said that whoever is standing closest to Salman’s left at the time of the announcement usually wins.
The History of the Left-Side Rule
Looking back in the previous seasons, this rule appeared to be quite valid. All three winners held Salman’s left hand; Munawar Faruqui from Bigg Boss Season 17, MC Stan from Season 16, and Rubina Dilaik from Season 14. Likewise, Sidharth Shukla (Season 13) Manveer Gurjar (Season 10) Gauahar Khan (Season 7) , Juhi Parmar (Season 5), and Shweta Tiwari (Season 4) were on the Bollywood actor’s left side when they were crowned winners.
Farah Khan did host Bigg Boss Halla Bol and till the very end, winner Gautam Gulati was always on her left side. That is why the majority of viewers expected Vivian Dsena, who is depicted by the artist standing to Salman’s left, to receive the award this year. But that is when Salman did the unexpected and raised the hand of Karan Veer Mehra.
Exceptions to the Rule
This is not the first time Salman Khan has bucked the trends of the left-side bias. Tejasswi Prakash a TV actor was on his right side during the Season 15finale of the show. Other lucky contestants who were on the right side are Dipika Kakar (Season 12), Shilpa Shinde (Season 11), Prince Narula (Season 9) , Urvashi Dholakia (Season 6) Vindu Dara Singh(Season 3) and Ashutosh Kaushik (Season 2).
In Season 1 Rahul Roy was declared the winner as soon as he came out of the Bigg Boss house and met the host Arshad Warsi.
The Joy of Chaos
Audiences want the unexpected and that is exactly what Bigg Boss provides each season. Adherence to, or violation of, the ‘left-side rule’ contributes to the build up, making what is in essence a reality program even more interesting for audiences.
