Bengaluru Techie Atul Subhash’s Suicide: The FIR That Led to His Torment

The suicide of Bengaluru software engineer Atul Subhash has raised serious questions about the misuse of dowry laws and flaws in the legal process. In his 24-page suicide note, Atul responded to each allegation made by his wife, Nikita Singhania, and provided evidence to support his claims.

The Marriage and FIR

Atul Subhash and Nikita met through Shaadi.com. They got married on April 26, 2019, at the Hindustan International Hotel in Varanasi. After the marriage, Nikita filed an FIR in the Jounpur police station on April 24, 2022, accusing Atul and his family of dowry harassment under various sections of the IPC and the Dowry Prohibition Act. In the FIR, Nikita named Atul, his mother Anju Devi, his father Pawan Modi, and his younger brother Vikas Modi.

Allegations in the FIR

Nikita claimed that after their marriage, Atul and his family started demanding 10 lakh rupees as dowry. She also accused Atul of drinking and beating her, as well as transferring her salary into his account. Nikita further stated that when her in-laws demanded money from her father on August 16, 2019, it led to her father’s sudden death the next day.

Atul’s Response in the Suicide Note

In his suicide note, Atul denied all the accusations. He mentioned that Nikita stayed with his family for only two days after the marriage before moving to Bengaluru. Regarding the allegations of abuse, Atul argued that there were no visible signs of violence such as bruises, photos, or police complaints, which would have been expected if he had been abusive.

Atul also addressed the dowry demand claim, saying that he himself earned a salary of 40 lakh rupees annually and didn’t need 10 lakh rupees as dowry. He pointed out that he had given his in-laws 15 lakh rupees for business, but instead of using it for business, they bought a one-crore house. When Atul asked for the money back, they only returned 1.5 lakh rupees in April 2021.

Legal Struggles and Torture

Atul also mentioned the emotional and physical toll of the legal process. He and his family had to attend court hearings in Jounpur about 120 times. Despite having only 23 holidays a year from his job, Atul personally attended 40 court hearings. This process became a source of mental and physical torture for him.

Nikita’s Mother’s Silence

Attempts were made to get Nikita Singhania’s mother’s side of the story, but she refused to comment on the matter.

The Questions Raised by the Suicide

Atul’s suicide has raised important questions about the misuse of dowry laws and the long, stressful legal procedures. His note not only defended his and his family’s actions but also highlighted how the legal process caused severe emotional strain. This case brings up significant issues about how laws are applied and their impact on people’s lives.
