AAP 7 Guarantees for Delhi's Dhobi

Delhi Election 2025: Why Arvind Kejriwal is Reaching Out to the Dhobi Community in the Fight for New Delhi

Kejriwal says, “I agree to the demands of the Dhobi community and promise that if our government is formed, we will set up a Dhobi Community Welfare Board in Delhi.”

AAP’s 7 Guarantees for Delhi’s Dhobi Community Ahead of 2025 Elections

As Delhi prepares for the high-stakes assembly elections on February 5, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP’s national convener and former chief minister, made a big announcement for the Dhobi community. He promised seven guarantees that would benefit the community if his party wins the election. These promises include the creation of a welfare board to help improve their lives.

Kejriwal’s Promises for the Dhobi Community

Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal shared his plans to improve the lives of the Dhobi community by ensuring they have access to basic services and better economic opportunities.

“As the national convenor of AAP and a candidate for chief minister, I agree to the Dhobi community’s demands. If our government is formed, we will create a Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board,” Kejriwal said.

7 Key Guarantees for the Dhobi Community

Kejriwal’s guarantees include several important initiatives:

  • Regularising Ironing Stands: Ensuring ironing stands are formally recognized.
  • Resuming Licensing for Dhobis: Restarting the process of issuing licenses for dhobis.
  • Affordable Utilities: Providing electricity and water at domestic rates.
  • Quality Education: Ensuring better education opportunities for the community’s children.
  • Welfare for Elderly Dhobis: Creating welfare schemes for elderly members of the community.
  • Scholarships for Students: Providing scholarships for children to receive quality education.
  • Skill Training for Youth: Offering skill training in traditional professions or other fields.

Kejriwal stated that the responsibility for these welfare schemes will lie with the Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board.

Why is AAP Targeting the Dhobi Community?

These measures are particularly important as the Dhobi community holds significant influence in the New Delhi assembly constituency, where Kejriwal is running for election. In this area, which has over 1.5 lakh registered voters, the Dhobi community plays a key role. Kejriwal is facing stiff competition from high-profile candidates from Congress and BJP.

Kejriwal is up against Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit, son of the late Sheila Dikshit, and BJP’s Parvesh Verma, a former MP. Kejriwal managed to win this seat in 2015 and 2020 with AAP’s governance model, but this time, he faces challenges such as corruption allegations.

Dhobi Community Faces Long-Standing Issues

The Dhobi community, especially those living in areas like Dhobi Ghat near Barapullah flyover, has been dealing with problems such as sewage and waterlogging. These issues, along with the lack of access to basic services like tap water, have affected the community’s voting decisions in the past.

A Warm Response from the Dhobi Mahasabha

Ravi Kumar, president of the Delhi Dhobi Mahasabha, expressed his gratitude towards Kejriwal. He said, “The Dhobi community often faces neglect from various government departments. The Dhobi Samuday Welfare Board will make it easier for us to access government services. We thank Arvind Kejriwal on behalf of the entire Dhobi community.”

These announcements come as a part of Kejriwal’s efforts to secure the support of the Dhobi community in the upcoming elections.
