Puneet Khurana, a cafe owner from Delhi, tragically died by suicide on December 31, 2024. His wife, Manika Pahwa, shared a cryptic post on social media just days before his death, revealing that she had been going through “toxicity and narcissistic abuse” and that she was now free. She added that feminism suited her.
Khurana, aged 40, owned the popular Woodbox Cafe in Delhi. He was found hanging at his house in Model Town on New Year’s Eve. The couple, who were co-owners of the cafe, were in the process of getting divorced.
The day before Khurana’s death, he recorded a conversation with his wife in which the two were heard arguing over business matters. In her social media post, Manika did not name anyone directly but shared her belief that kindness, love, and respect should be given to everyone. She hinted at the idea that higher powers control what happens to people who wrong others.
Manika also expressed that feminism aligned with her ideals, which included treating everyone with respect. She wrote, “Feminism suits me because idealistic values are my core. Feminism means giving and getting mere respect from one another. No slave treatment, and no stopping a girl from speaking her mind.” She emphasized that everyone, from a house help to a child, deserved respectful treatment. Manika rejected the idea that respect had to be earned, stating, “Respect has to be given to each and everyone. If not, then you lose the respect.” She also reflected on how in India, people address others with terms like “aap,” “bhaiya,” or “didi,” even when they are strangers.
Manika hoped that those who mistreat others would one day understand the importance of kindness, love, trust, wisdom, and care. She pointed out that these values were more important than money, property, or gold.
Meanwhile, Khurana’s family mentioned that Puneet had been upset with his wife before his death. The couple had married in 2016, and their relationship had been strained due to a business dispute regarding the cafe. Puneet’s family claimed that Manika and her family had been putting a lot of pressure on him. Puneet’s sister told the news agency ANI that Manika had pushed him to the point of emotional stress. She said that Manika and her family members had even told Puneet, “You can’t do anything, die by suicide if you dare.”
This case is similar to the recent suicide of Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old techie from Bengaluru. Subhash also took his own life after accusing his wife and her family of emotional and legal harassment. He left behind a 24-page note describing the pain he endured because of their behavior.
