One of the most influential political leaders in contemporary India Om Prakash Chautala served as the seventh chief minister of Haryana. He was a son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, former Deput Prime Minister of India and had a major influence on the politics of Haryana. Chautala was convicted in May 2022 by a CBI court in Delhi in a 16-year-old disproportionate assets case; on the age of 87 years, the ex-bureaucrat is the oldest prisoner of Tihar jail. He was released in 2020.
Chautalas’ wife SNEH LATA CHAUTALA died on 15 August 2019. He is survived by three daughters and two sons; Abhay Singh Chautala and Ajay Singh Chautala. Currently, Ellenabad MLA is Abhay Singh Chautala who was the Leader of Opposition in Haryana Assembly 2014- 2019.
Dushyant Chautala who is the grandson of Chautala is the sitting Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) leader has also had some terms as the deputy chief minister of Haryana. He was also a Member of Parliament for the Hisar constituency before.

The young Om Prakash Chautala was born in a small village near Sirsa, Haryana Om Prakash Chautala started his political career following his father Chaudhary Devi Lal, who played considerable role to form Haryana in 1966, was the Chief Minster of Haryana and later India’s Deputy Prime Minister. However, Om Prakash Chautala quit schooling immediately after and entered politics in 1970 as the member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly for the Janata Dal party.
As a young politician Chautala touched the highest heights of controversies. One ma;or incidence that happened to him was his arrestition at the Delhi airport in 1978 while trying to smuggle a number of wristwatches into the country. This led to break up with his father and finally he came back into political mainstream of Haryana. But it became a nightmare for him in 1990 when his opposition political rival was assassinated and he was accused of the act.
Chautala has a Rajya Sabha member for three years during the term from July 1987 to July 1990 and in December 1989 selected as the Chief Minister of Haryana in replacement for his father, who was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister. However, he was compelled to resign in May 1990 when he could not gain an assembly seat within the constitutional required six months. He later contested and emerged victorious in a bye-election and, though only for a period in 1990/1991 acted as the Chief Minster.
From 1967 to 1987, Chautala was an MLA for the Congress Party but after the Congress Party lost in the 1991 Haryana elections, Chautala again won assembly by-elections in 1993. He shocked everyone by resigning in protest against an agreement to get water from Haryana supply to other states in the same year 1995. Chautala secured a seat in 1996 elections and became the leader of opposition. Soon, the Haryana Vikas Party lost its majority in 1999 and Chautala once again became the Chief Minister successfully for the fourth time after INLD was formed in 1998.
