Parliament Session LIVE: Ministerial sittings turned into fisticuffs on Thursday as ruling coalition and the opposition engaged in a free-for-all as a result of the Ambedkar remark strife. The melee degenerated into an argy-bargy over who started the fight, two BJP MPs were claimed to have been assaulted and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge stated that he was physically assaulted by BJP MPs inside the House.
An FIR was filed against the Congress MP Rahul Gandhi a Lok sabha member who is present member of the lower house of the Indian Parliament and is also acting as the leader of the opposition. The Congress, however, termed the FIR that it said Gandhi had filed as a ‘diversionary tactic’ for rejecting the Bharat Rath Yatra and coming down heavily on Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent comment on Ambedkar.
Both NDA and opposition MPs held their protests in the Parliament premises on Thursday over Shah’s remarks. On one side, the opposition wants respect and an apology and Shah’s resignation, on the other side the ruling party accused Congress of insulting Ambedkar first.
Both houses of the Indian Parliament – the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha reassembly is expected at 11 this morning.
Parliament Winter Session: Key Developments
1 Origin of the Tension: The aggression between the opposition and the ruling NDA was triggered by Amit Shah’s response in a Constitution debate on Tuesday in the Rajya Sabha.
2 Physical Altercations: The melee heard during Thursday’s protest left two BJP MPs seriously injured.
3 Kharge’s Allegations: The congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that he was physically assaulted by the BJP MPs and he wants an inquiry into the entire episode.
4 Speaker’s Directive: In response to the incidents, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla barred MPs and political parties from protesting at the gates of the Parliament complex.
5 Complaint Against Rahul Gandhi: The BJP also sought an FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi under sections of physical assault and incitement to effect unlawful assembly. These led to the registration of FIR against Gandhi which accused him of offences under the sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), causing grievous hurt, endangering life, criminal force and common intention.
6 Congress’s Response: Congress called FIR a ‘mark of honour,’ said it was done to distract from Gandhi’s strong stand for Ambedkar against Shah.
