Schools in Puducherry, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, and Tirunelveli Declared Holiday Due to Heavy Rains on Friday Morning
While different parts of Tamil Nadu receive heavy rains on Friday December 13 2024 District Collectors from Madurai Mayiladuthurai among others have closed school.
The decision to declare the school holiday was made early this morning by the Madurai Collector M.S. Sangeetha as well as Mayiladuthurai district collector A.P. Mahabharathi due to the heavy rainfall.
The Collector of Tiruvallur said that schools and colleges would remain open, but headmasters can declare a holiday if there are problems with water logging.
The region of Southern Tamil Nadu received the heaviest downpour the previous Thursday (December 12, 2024) but tourists remained confined to their rooms in Kodaikanal, and many sites were virtually empty.
Both Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts have declared holiday for schools and colleges today as have Pudukottai and Karur districts. But schools and colleges in Chennai were open since only few showers were reported some of the localities on Friday morning and things remained largely cloudy.
Puducherry Union Territory Minister A. Namassivayam said that schools and colleges in both Karaikal and Puducherry would be closed.
Besides this, school holidays were declared in the districts of Salem and Cuddalore. The Water Resources Department said that it would open 1,000 cusecs from Chembarambakkam reservoir and 500 cusecs from Red Hills reservoir in the morning.
Because of the persistent and heavy rainfall, schools in Dindigul and Theni districts and in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga were closed. Likewise, colleges in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi districts were shut like schools in these districts was declared holidays earlier.
The schools in Virudhunagar district were however closed for the day while in Ariyalur Collector P Rathinasamy declared a holiday for both schools and college ahead of the rain.
In Nagapattinam district, schools were avoided for the day and in Perambalur district both schools and colleges remained shut. In addition, schools in Karur, Tiruppur and Valparai districts were closed on Friday also.
