Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took to Twitter to remember the second Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient Chaudhary Charan Singh on his birth anniversary. On X, PM.Modi underlined charismatic Chaudhary Charan Singh’s absolute commitment to the poor, farmers. He posted, “On the birth anniversary of ex Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh ji pay my humble tribute to him and salute for his work for the poor and farmers. All will agree that his commitment and service to his nation will remain core to inspiring everyone.”
Former Home Minister of India Amit Shah also took to Twitte on X to honour the former Prime Minister. He said, “Chaudhary Charan Singh ji was a saint like person who worked only & only for the rights of farmers and the down- trodden”. During the Emergency he fearlessly stood against anti-democracy forces. By his life he wanted to show that a man from the crowd can become the head of the country if he makes service as his goal. His character is however inspiring for character and demeanour as is his actions for efficiency of every social worker. Shah further said, “Today is the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh ji, the farmers’ messiah and remembering him, on this occasion.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also said that Chaudhary Charan Singh dedicated his life for the upliftment of poor and farmers. He also wrote on X, “I take this opportunity to pay my humble tribute to the former prime minister of India Chaudhary Charan Singh on his birth anniversary. He devoted his life for the welfare of the poor and farmers. If there were tensions in the country that threatened the democracy, it was him, who would take action to defend the rights. Though they go from villages to cities, Chaudhary sahab never let his roots go away from him. Therefore many years from now people will still remember his contributions to Indias development. Rajnath Singh also pointed out that today the whole country observes ‘Kisan Diwas’-the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh. He extended his Kisan Diwas greetings to all the farmers also outlined several schemes envisaged by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to empower the farmers from production to plate. Rajnath Singh was confident that with the legacy of Chaudhary Charan Singh the commitment of the government to the farmer is going to get stronger.
Chaudhary Charan Singh was born in 1902 in Noorpur a small village in the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, part of British India now known as Uttar Pradesh to middle-class farming parents. Ling was employed in 1929 in Meerut where he was to join the Congress Party later. He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1937 from Chhaprauli and to the first, second, third and fourth Assembly after the India’s political division from Pakistan in 1946, 1952, 1962 and 1967. In 1946 he assumed the post of Parliamentary Secretary in Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant’s government from which he handling different portfolios such as Revenue, Medical and Public Health, Justice, and Information etc.
What else is notable is that Chaudhary Charan Singh was an influential politician that served with the Janata Party, as well as being a writer. He has a keen interest in social prosperity as well as economic development which can be seen from the topics he wrote on: namely land reforms and agriculture. He was also hailed as the chief brain behind the land reforms in Uttar Pradesh. Some of the outcomes included the Department Redemption Bill of 1939 and the Land Holding Act of 1960; the main objectives were to try to reform the issue of land distribution and agricultural conservation.
