Celebrate on December 31, New Year is called the last day, the eve of the new year and the beginning of a new year. The day is one where people can remember the past year and set new goals and plans for the new year to come in. They may differ in terms of rituals but common elements are families reunion, preparation of special dishes, fire works and fires.
The practice of counting the new year has its roots as far back as the year 2000 BC, with the Babylonians probably being one of the first to make celebrations during the vernal equinox, on March 20 or 21. Although in earlier times New Year was observed in March, with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar, the first of January is observed as the New Year.
The early Romans celebrated the New Year on the first of March initially. Historically, the year started on the first of March, and it was only with Julius Caesar in 46 BCE that the Roman calendar put January 1 as the start of the year. In the Julian calendar adopted by Julius Caesar in 45 BC and later by eastern Orthodox Church replaced in 1582 by the Gregorian calendar started each year on March 1st or with the vernal equinox. In essence over time New Year’s Eve has transformed to be a world event.
