Oyo Clarifies New Check-In Process to Partner Hotels on Accommodation of Unmarried Couples
New Delhi, Jan 5, 2025 – Coming under criticism for the policy change that bars couples who are not married from accessing their partner hotels, Oyo clarified on Sunday that the move is aimed at making available comfortable stay for families, students, business persons, religious people and other individuals who may wish to take a solo trip.
The policy began with Meerut, and this forces partner hotels to implement this policy right away. At the time of writing this case, Oyo is testing the policy, but based on feedback it may be implemented on further cities also in the future.
According to new issued rules, the couples required valid identification documents to show at the front desk, even if they booked the room online.
Currently, Oyo has provided its partner hotels full autonomy in banning couple bookings because the decision depends on the management’s discretion to respect cultural beliefs and practices back at home.
Following through the company released a statement to affirming its concern in safe practices of hospitality for all clients.
On one hand, we appreciate and respect people’s freedom and their liberties, but on the other hand, we understand our corporate responsibility as participants of the civil society and as business owners, to cooperate with the law enforcement bodies of the regions in which we exist. ”On the implementation of this policy, and its impact, we shall provide regular feedbacks,” the statement added.
The act forms part of the multiple steps that Oyo has taken to rebrand and transform perceptions of the new Oyo innovation as a safe destination for families, students, business people, religious people and single individuals. This policy is also implemented to provide longer stay and repeated business, which increases the customer confidence.
In September of the previous year, the parent company of Oyo – Oravel Stays bought Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands that are comprised of approximately 1,500 facilities in the United States and Canada. The $525 million all-cash deal with Blackstone makes Oyo a major player in the hospitality sector in the US and Canada, reporting to a large extend already owned by Indian Americans.
