Punjab Teachers Arrested as Delhi Police Prevent Protest from Reaching Arvind Kejriwal’s Residence

NEW DELHI: Monday saw teachers from Punjab being taken into custody by the Delhi Police who sought to protest near the official residence of AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.. The teachers were actually protestig about pay scales for teachers and came to Kejriwals house carrying flowers.

Kamal Thakur, the president of Punjab teachers’ union said that ‘They have appointed about 4500 teacher as regular staff in 2016 . Latter, 180 of these teachers were transferred to 7th Pay Commission for which their salaries were reduced to half. The Punjab government also continued its probation period up to eight years while also ignoring the completed probation period.

Pr. I further asked Thakur more that read the letter of education minister of Punjab that he also admitted this was a departmental mistake. The file to correct our salaries has been with the Punjab finance minister for the past three years waiting to be acted upon. Today, the said complain has brought ourselves to the leader of AAP.”

Earlier, on December 9, Punjab’s finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema and education minister Harjot Singh Bains had meetings with four employees unions of education department to discuss their demands.

Cheema called for the establishment of a committee with members from education, personnel, and finance departments regarding the regularization issue that has been filed by three unions: the AIE Kachhe Adhiypak Union, IERT Vishesh Adhiyapak Union, and the Sarva (Samagra) Shiksha Abhiyan/Mid Day Meal Daftri Karmchari Union. He assured the union leaders that their requests would be considered sympathetically introducing the committee and the report would be out shortly.
