Lok sabha will proceed with discussing the Readjustment of Scheduled Tribes’ Representation in Goa’s Assembly Constituencies on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 after the end of the current session.
Battle lines were drawn on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 when two bills that sought to propose and having the general election to the Lok Sabha and to the State Assemblies simultaneously were presented by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The bills elicited serious controversy with the opposition making points that this legislation was ‘anti-federal’ and unconstitutional. The bills were passed with division, 269 voting in favour and 198 opposing and for the first time the electronic voting system was used in newly constructed Parliament House.
Sitting in Rajya Sabha on the same day, the two-day discussion on Constitution came to an end. Opposition members complained that the Centre has erred on Constitutional provisions over the last decade and asked BJP members to talk of the present problems instead of pointing to Jawaharlal Nehru. The Two ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bills were introduced by the government as its “hubris,” said Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien; the lawmaker vowed to stop Parliament from turning into an “RSS shakha”.
