Gautam Gambhir’s Tribute to Retiring R Ashwin: “You Will Inspire a Generation of Bowlers

Ravichandran Ashwin called quit on his Test career on Wednesday after the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba that ended in a draw due to rain. This result means that the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is now drawn 1-1.

Ashwin had announced his retirement after the rain and bad light cut further playing time in Brisbane. After his declaration, everyone praised him saying good things and several cricketers like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma wished him.

Gautam Gambhir shared a touching tribute, writing: To be a part of your journey from a young man with a bowling talent to a titan of the modern cricket is one of the blessings I never will regret!” I think many generations of bowlers to come will wake up and declare that they became bowlers because of Ashwin! You will be missed, brother.”

Ashwin, who has played Test cricket since November 2011, was joined by Rohit Sharma for the post-match press conference. This will be my last year of Indian cricketer across all three forms of the game: Test, ODI, and T20. That said yes, there are couple of months left in me but that I would love to exhibit in club level cricket. The cricketing world will have to look for some other lucky man because Pak’s Owais Shah, speaking of his final day in international cricket, said:

Rohit Sharma also backed Ashwin saying that he is very funny and was always available for his team when things were tough. ‘Wherever we have had problems, we have turned to Ash and he has come good for us.” He has been a brilliant servant, they added, doing everything possible and more.

Ashwin’s career stats are impressive: In Test cricket they played 100 matches and has taken 537 wickets, this makes him the second highest wicket taker for India after Anil Kumble. He also remains the record holder for the highest Player of the Series awards in Test cricket, and also second most five-wickets haul in an innings.
