Mbappe’s goal came in the first half at Lusail Stadium, the same one at which he dazzled en route to a hat trick in the World Cup final two years ago and put Real Madrid on track for the triumph. A pair of goals by Rodrygo and another goal by Vinicius Jr in the second half came to add to the win.
Mbappe put the Lloris between the sticks of France in front in the first half’s closing when he converted a small range from Vinicius’ brilliant dribble that overwhelmed goalkeeper Carlos Moreno of Pachuca to beat him and get to the target.
Seven minutes into the second half, Rodrygo doubled the lead by beating the goalkeeper with a fine curler from the edge of the box. They embraced the goal after a pitchside review by referee Jesus Valenzuela who after consulting on an offside position of Jude Bellingham concluded he did not influence the play.
In the first half Pachuca’s captain Salomon Rondon tried to breast Thibaut Courtois with a super free-kick from the top of the box and towards half time the 35-year-old former West Brom and Everton striker Rondon came close to scoring with a towering header which went inches over the bar.
Vinicius, who won the men’s player of the year at FIFA Best awards recently, put Madrid 3-1 up from spot-kick. The penalty was granted after Lucas Vazquez was pulled down by the opponent player Oussama Idrissi.
This first intercontinental cup is proposed as a replacement for the FIFA Club World Cup planned for the following summer, and participating in a simple elimination system as they are the champions of five continental club championships.
The Concacaf Champions Cup holders-Dorados de Pachuca knocked out Al-Ahly of Egypt- the holders of CAF Champions League for the final. The European Champions Cup participants were Mama and Juventus, while UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid entered the competition on the final tour.
