IND vs AUS 3rd Test: Indian Pacers Dominate at Gabba, Australia Declare at 89/7; India Set 275-Run Target

After they had reached 89/7, Australia dramatically declared early and set India 275 to win on the final day of the third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane on Wednesday.

This brought forceful reaction from skipper Pat Cummins after 18 overs, when both sides still had an opportunity of forcing a result in the remaining 50 plus overs of the final session.

Although the rain washed out most of the morning play, the Australian batsmen came out to bat in the same aggressive mindset as they had before with no attention towards their wickets.

Australia’s brief afternoon effort was Alex Carey, 20 n.o., off 20 balls, Pat Cummins, 22, off 10 balls, Travis Head, 17, off 19 balls, all getting into double figures as the team batted for 18 overs before being dismissed. By the time declaration came in there was a minimum of 54 overs still left in the day. Facing no loss, India was 8 for two in their second innings when rain intervened and the players went off for an early tea break.

Jasprit Bumrah (3/18) was again Indian team’s star bowler and along with Mohammed Siraj (2/36) and Akash Deep (2/28) they bowled well. Nathan McSweeney (4) and Marnus Labuschagne (1) got out playing really bad shots away from the body, and Usman Khawaja (8) plus Mitchell Marsh (2) were dismissed playing to deliveries that were good ones.

There was some success for Australia as they lost wickets regularly at one go and still kept the pressure on, hoping for a big hit. Skipper Cummins also made two sixs and two fours before he declared the innings.

Just 24 balls were possible in the rain affected morning session before lightning and rain intervened. India, resuming at 252 for nine, added eight more runs before being bowled for 260, setting the Aussies a target of 185 runs. Akash Deep went for the last and he was stumped off Travis Head after making 31; he put up a 47-run stand with Jasprit Bumrah, who remained unbeaten on 10.

The third Test was filled with interruptions due to rain which happened during five days of the. Earlier India were all out for 260 in their first essay in reply to a formidable total of 445 for Australia. Akash Deep supported Bumrah on Day 4 to a 47-run partnership reversing the follow-on chance for India.
