New Delhi to Host the 2025 Para Athletics World Championships

Para Athletics World Championships-the biggest Para sports event on the planet will begin from the 26th of September to the 5th of October in year 2025 at the JLN Stadium.

The largest single Para sports event, the Para Athletics World Championships will be held between September 26 and October 5, 2025, in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium of New Delhi. Further, for the first time, the city is to organize a World Para Athletics Grand Prix between March 11 and 13, 2025, at JLN Stadium. This will create an appetite of what is to be expected in the later part of the year during the World Championships.

The Para Athletics World Championships will be the 12th time the event will happen, and it will happen in India for the first time at New Delhi in 2025. This will also be the fourth time the championships are hosted in Asia and the third time it will be held in the Middle East after Doha in 2015, Dubai in 2019 and Kobe in 2024.

WPA declared the event on December 19, 2024, and showed enthusiasm to host such great championship in India. Paul Fitzgerald, Head of World Para Athletics, stressed the importance of holding the first major championships of the new Paralympic cycle before the Games in Los Angeles 2028. He was quick to point out that the 2025 Para Athletics World Championships will be the biggest Para sporting event ever to be hosted in India and the coming event will not only help develop the sport to the requisite level but also help grow the fan base for para sports and change the perception of disabled persons especially in the largest populated country in the world.

He also appreciated the progress made by India in para athletics from the country that won two silver medals at the 2015 World Championships in Doha to one that could clinch 17 medals in all, including six gold, at the 2024 World Championships in Kobe. Credit for this success goes to the National Paralympic Committee of India (NPC India) and for the progression of Para sports in the country.

The National Paralympic Committee of India also seem to be proud of hosting the event: it was being referred looked at as a major step towards making India a powerhouse in world sports. It will also build up pressure on India in their ambitious bid preparation to host the Olympics and Paralympics of the year 2036. As there are more than sixty million people with disabilities in this country this has become a significant contribution towards the mandate of mainstreaming for disabled athletes.

This was followed by the statement from NPC India to underpin that the event will depict India’s growth in Para sports and will help expand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘New India’.

There are more than 1000 members of para athletics from over 100 countries that competed in the last Para Athletics World Championships in Kobe, Japan. China won 33 golds and 87 total medals and topped the medals table for the first time for India as it secured a top-six finish.
