India vs Australia 5th Test: Positive second session for India on the first day at Sydney
India posted a good show in the second session of the fifth and final cricket Test against Australia on the SCG on Friday.
Tea was taken at 107 for 4 in the 50th over with Pant on 32 and Jadeja on 11. The pair put on 50 runs for the cost of one wicket during the session.
Any chances of an Indian fightback were dashed when Virat Kohli followed Pant to the pavilion shortly after lunch but the latter put up a spirited show with Jadeja, building a 35-run fifth-wicket stand.
India’s scoring was still very slow; in the first innings, the team was batting at just over 2 as their run rate.
The three visitors got off to a wobbly start in the morning, with K L Rahul (4) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) back to the pavillion.
Shubman Gill then came ahead to partner with Virat Kohli and both of them tried to restore back the innings. Kohli, because of his poor form in the last matches, adopted a conserved approach and looked for the big hits only when available. The third wicket partnership between Gill and Kohli brought 40 runs and just before lunch, Gill lost his concentration and got out on the last ball.
After lunch, Kohli and Pant tried to hurt the Australians with a 15 run partnership yet again Kohli was dismissed by Scott Boland this time caught right at slip. Debutee Beau Webster made no mistake in taking the catch which was the third time Boland got rid of Kohli in the series.
Most of the times Pant has been away from his natural aggressive self, he has been conscious of his positions before playing the shots. Though he may have received blows, he is still important for India to boost the total of the first innings.
