PM Narendra Modi Begins Kuwait Visit Today: Interaction with Indian Diaspora and Meeting with Emir | Details

The Ministry of External Affairs informed that PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Kuwait may go down in history as the starting point that will help India and Kuwait start a new chapter in their bilateral relations.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will undertake a two day official visit to Kuwait in the weekend for the first time since the country was liberated and the first time an Indian Prime Minister has done so in over forty years.

The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981 and the then Vice President Hamid Ansari visited Kuwait in 2009.

During his visit to Kuwait, India’s PM Modi will hold talks with Kuwait’s premier officials, the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, The Crown Prince, and Kuwait Prime Minister. Whether these talks will focus on consolidating cooperation in terms of trade, investment, energy, cultural relations, and people-to-people contacts – this is clear.

The visit of Modi is on the invitation of the Amir. In addition to the official working meetings he will go to the Indian workers’ labor camp, deliver a speech at a local gathering and attend the inauguration of the Gulf Cup football contest.

Modi (@narendramodi) before they left for Kuwait, posted a message on X which was formerly twitter, “Today and tomorrow I will visit Kuwait”. It will help to enhance historical relations between India and Kuwait during the present visit. I am empathetic to know him and interact with His Highness the Amir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister of Kuwait. Tonight I will be with the Indian people and also participate in the event of the beginning the Arabian Gulf Cup.

As per the news agency ANI, there is a planned large community event ‘Hala Modi’ to be held at Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Sports Complex.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that the visit would “start a new chapter of” the India Kuw relation.
“This visit will not only fortify the present partnership but also expand a new horizon for the further cooperation , identify and share the common values and vision and will create an enhanced energetic type of relation,” said Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary for Overseas Indian Affairs for Media briefing.

Chatterjee also stressed current discussions with Kuwait on the signing of a BIT and an MoU in defense cooperation. It is believed that the visit will help develop the relations between India and the gulf collaboration council (GCC) led by Kuwait.

The GCC, which is a strong group of UAE, Bahrain, KSA, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait, set a $184.46 bn figured for trade volume in 2022-23 with India.

India-Kuwait Relations

India is the Kuwait’s main trading partner and combined trade has reached to $10.47 billion in 2023-24. It doing so, I/C Indian exports to Kuwait increased from $1.56 bn in 2022-23 to $2.1 bn in 2023-24 which is by 34.7%.

Kuwait lies at the 6th position in India’s list of crude oil suppliers catering to 3 percent of India’s energy requirement. The KIA has invested over $10 billion in India. Furthermore, First, Indians in Kuwait are over one million which makes them the largest expatriate community in Kuwait.
