Bangladesh’s interim leader Sheikh Hasina’s chief of staff, Sheikh Yunus, suggests parliament polls possible by end 2024 or early 2025.

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh’s current prime minister after Sheikh Hasina was ousted by the military, Muhammad Yunus also said on Monday that general elections may take place by the end of 2025 or early 2026. The announcement has come under rising demands for a timeline for the polls following an August student revolt that brought down Hasina’s government.

The 84-year-old Nobel laureate is leading a transitional government that he said is performing what he called ‘challenging’ to build democracy in the South Asian nation of 170 million people.

Speaking to the nation through state television, Yunus said, “It may be possible that the election may be timed by the end of 2025 or in the first half of 2026 at the earliest”.

Hasina, 77, had left Bangladesh after protesters marched to the prime minister’s house in Dhaka. In her administration, her party was accused of politicizing the judiciary and civil service and manipulation of the elections, as well as efforts at subverting democracy.

Meta analysis: During her 15 years rule, Hasina was said to have conducted rampant abuse of rights of her subjects involving mass detention and political assassinations of the opposition.

Yunus has appointed commissions for key changes and reiterated the necessity of party agreement for election timeframe . ”Before deciding to arrange elections I have always insisted that some reforms should be under way,” he said.

When political parties ask for the election to occur earlier, with little reforms such as completing an accurate voter register, the election may be held as soon as November, said Yunus. But he said that hiring a complete set of electoral reforms may lead the polls even several months later.

However Hussein Omar has accused the interim government of Bangladesh of being unfit for power while the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has come out clearly to condemn the interim government she described it an undemocratic group that has been secretly supporting the forces that are anti liberation.

On the occasion of the Killing of Pakistani soldiers in Bangladesh 1971 Liberation War hasin called Muhammad Yunus as a fascist trying to denounce the freedom fighter index.

Her party’s statement concerned the leadership of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the Awami League to gain Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

‘This is an unelected committee, which is headed by the fascist Yunus who does not have any regard for the people,’ Hasina stated. ”They are acquiring authority and preventing common good processes,” she further stated.
