NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill for the conduct of simultaneous elections across the country. From its sources, the bill, is expected to be tabled before Parliament in the next one week.
On September this year the Cabinet cleared the ‘One Nation, One Election’ process, where all the Lok Sabha, state assembly, urban local bodies, and panchayat polls would happen within 100 days.
The program was being evaluated by a committee consisting of Patel with former President Ram Nath Kovind, as the committee head. In March, the committee gave its report out saying that prolonged election leads to making administrative uncertainty and hinders the government decision making process. The report indicated that holding the elections at the same time would encourage stability in policies as well as increase people’s turnout due to exhaustion caused by making endless trips to the poll .
This document, which counts 18,626 pages, has been prepared after consultation of stakeholders and specialists, as well as a research work realized in 191 days after the creation of the committee on September the 2nd, 2023.
